Okay Mommas and Daddy's of all School Kids Ages, it’s time
to rev up those mini vans and get racing back to the school year!!
As the lazy days of summer gives way to the start
of the new year, the pace quickens and the intensity heightens as after school
activities and homework replaces your evening swim.
All the angst and anxiety of the first days of school floods back in waves of post traumatic stress. My belly is full of butterflies as the stream of doubts about the unknown in store for my kids flutter about.
The school year is intense.
Just planning my kids after school activities, my son's services and how to be in two places at once is an art form. If they split the atom, I can figure it out.... right????
I used to watch my mom wrack her brain with managing my sister and I's schedules thinking she were crazy, and now, as the tide turned, she derives the most pleasure from her front row seats to crazy town, USA.
Is it Winter Break yet?

1st day of School |
By the time I finish shopping for their back to school wardrobe it will be winter. What's awesome about North Eastern living is that children require head to toe wardrobes for all four seasons and so multiplies the apparel budget by 4. And, they grow like weeds.
I used to love shopping with my mom and being schooled in shopping strategies - how to build upon your wardrobe, spotting a great deal, etc. On the rare occasions there's time for us to meet and shop, she still gives me styling tips and life lessons and parenting insights into her grandchildren.
While as a little girl, I enjoyed the time with my mom, I cared more for sports than for fashion. My girl, however, thoroughly enjoys it. Watching her do her thing is so much fun and I've learned to trust her instincts. She will wear what she picks, especially if she says "OMG, I die for this." She's 6.
We try to coordinate outings with my mom so there will be three generations shopping, usually at Lord & Taylor. We'll meet first for lunch at Sarabeths and then hit the levels and visit Elise Banhyoun at Laura Mercier. My daughter discovered Elise, a mom of 5, on one such occasion and she's now our go to makeup momma!!
Through Elyse I met Kay Moini, the community centric, GM at Lord & Taylor (Manhasset) and we've collaborated on a few events together. Most recently, a Back to School Fashion Show!

MomTime Events & Lord & Taylor's Back To School Fashion Show |
My early obsession with Project Runway paid off, as that's about the only qualification I have to run a fashion show. We had fun pre-show hours to choose our kid's "looks" from the fall collection. All the models were locally sourced (aka my friend's kids) and the focus of the event was to celebrate another year of growing, learning and building friendships.
The day of the girls had their makeup done and my friend Macha led the "models" in a pre-show meditation. Jasmine Sanker opened the show with her Deeva Dancers and we rocked out the whole time. It was an incredible amount of fun.
Models, Me and Kay at Lord & Taylor |
Hoping our "models" take their smiles and confidence off as "students" onto life's runway while wearing their new duds is a constant prayer. Helping them strut proudly is a shared responsibility.
Like William Butler Yeats pearl "Education is not filling a pail but lighting a fire", our children are walking sparks waiting to be ignited. For when their spirits dull we lose a part of ourselves and dim the future.
May all of our children shine brightly through this new school year!!

Disclosure: I was not compensated for this post and received a clothing allowance for the Back to School Event from Lord and Taylor to purchase my BCBG "look" for the fashion show (featured above). Luckily I had a coupon for me to purchase my children's "looks". For me, the reward was in seeing the community rally together to support and watch our kids shine!!! I've been a loyal Lord and Taylor shopper since childhood. :)
